Style Formatting

Making your turnover look pretty is nice and all, but every style you include in your document will likely be undone by the layout artist. The only text styling you should include is bold and italic, where appropriate. If you don't know where these are appropriate, please read the RGG Style Guide. Other than that, here is a list of Dos and Don’ts:

DON’T:

  • Add extra returns between paragraphs. Spacing is determined by layout.
  • Put extra spaces between sentences. You are not using a typewriter. All modern software handles that spacing appropriately for you.
  • Use tabs to indent paragraphs. They will be applied as a style by layout.
  • Do not embed tables in your text. Just put ONE tab between each entry on each row. Extra tabs to make the entries line up will just confuse the table when it’s converted from text.
  • Assume the layout artist is a psychic. Please put notes to layout in brackets [] when you need to convey something specific, such as [begin bullet list], [illo: Ranger with bow]

DO:

  • When making notes to layout about the beginning of a list or sidebar (per above), always note the end of the entry as well [end bullet list].
  • Note where your headers should be. You do not need to note the ending in these cases, as they are just one line.
  • Example:
    • This:

[H1] Introduction
Body of the introduction to the book. Body of the introduction to the book. Body of the introduction to the book. Body of the introduction to the book. Body of the introduction to the book.
[H2] Races
This chapter introduces new races to play and enjoy. This chapter introduces new races to play and enjoy. This chapter introduces new races to play and enjoy. This chapter introduces new races to play and enjoy. This chapter introduces new races to play and enjoy.

Will look something like this after layout:

Introduction

Body of the introduction to the book. Body of the introduction to the book. Body of the introduction to the book. Body of the introduction to the book. Body of the introduction to the book.

Races

This chapter introduces new races to play and enjoy. This chapter introduces new races to play and enjoy. This chapter introduces new races to play and enjoy. This chapter introduces new races to play and enjoy. This chapter introduces new races to play and enjoy.

  • And, just to reiterate, go ahead and style your text where appropriate for bold and italic. Your layout artist may not be familiar with how to handle spells and abilities, that’s your job.
